This large circa 1760 horn measures about 15 - 1/2" across the bow. The curved body has a tapered spout section with a brass spout of 1 - 3/4", probably replaced during its period of use. The main body features a scalloped edge. The horn is professionally engraved with a large British crest and an extensive map of New York's waterways, towns, and forts. There are many detailed buildings depicted as well as trees, ships, and repeating decorative designs around the base of the horn. Some places of interest are Albany, New York City, Ticonderoga, Fort Edward, Fort Anna, Fort Miller, Fort Saratoga, William Henry, Fort Williams, Fort Hunter, and many other locations. The wooden butt is slightly convex and retained by wooden pins. The horn still retains its original horn flange with two holes for strap attachment. CONDITION: As found and untouched, pleasing honey patina. A large age crack runs along the horn along with some shorter age cracks from shrinkage. Butt is loose and a couple pins are absent. A very attractive, professionally engraved powder horn.
