In 1867, General B. S. Roberts developed a simple dropping breech design similar to convert Civil War surplus percussion muskets into more modern breech loading rifles. This short frame example was built on a standard configuration 1864 dated Savage contract M1861 musket. The breech of the original National Armory bright barrel has been replaced with Roberts' design, marked on the left side with 2-line patent information. The bayonet lug front sight and 3-position leaf rear sight are retained. Fit with a full length walnut military stock marked on the left flat with 2 script cartouches and fit with standard bright iron mounts. CONDITION: Fine. Metal components are bright showing some areas of cleaned oxidation with markings remaining sharp. Stock has a rich age darkened appearance, showing some expected impressions throughout. Mechanically fine with a strong bore. An overall attractive example of a scarce conversion with a low survival rate.
