The factory letter states that this revolver was shipped on January 28, 1902 as a .38 Colt with 4 - 1/2" barrel, blue finish, pearl grips, and factory engraving, sent to Walter. G. Clarke in Omaha, Nebraska, in a one gun shipment. Gun has matching numbers on frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. The underside of barrel is stamped ".38". Left side of barrel has roll die stamp "COLT DA 38". Top of barrel is stamped with two line barrel address. Left side of frame has the three line barrel address with Colt pony in circle. This example has an unusual stepped front sight base with cut back blade. The factory engraving appears to be that of Cuno Helfricht or his shop. This gun has a similar flag design on top of back strap as an 1886 gun. Gun features nearly full coverage of basic American bank note scroll with punch dot background. Fine border engraving around all the Colt legends. The only areas not engraved are the flutes, front grip strap, and hammer. CONDITION: Very good. There are still traces of blue on ejector housing and trigger guard while the balance of finish is now a soft grey patina. Engraving is still crisp. The pearl grips are excellent. Action works both single and double. The bore is strong but frosted with light abrasion.
