Manufactured circa 1870. Fitted with a blued 27" round barrel with 2-line address. 24" magazine tube retained by 3 barrel bands, the central band with sling swivel. 3rd Model receiver marked on tang with an "M" for musket. Receiver features panels of deep, nearly relief engraved flowing foliate scrolls over punch dot shaded backgrounds. The right side is inscribed in a banner "Paxades M. Sagasta", possibly for Praxedes Mateo Sagasta. Born in 1825, Sagasta joined the Progressive Party while studying Civil Engineering in Madrid. He served in the Cortes starting in 1854 but was forced into exile in France after opposing Queen Isabella II in 1866. After returning to Spain in 1868 for the Revolution, he served as Prime Minister 7 times prior to his death in 1903, including during the Spanish American War. Plain walnut stocks, the butt mounted with rear sling swivel. Brass trap butt plate stamped on the heel with a "40" rack number and internally numbered "1511". CONDITION: Very good overall. Blued finish has drifted to a pleasant chocolate patina throughout with some silvering around the muzzle. Receiver displays an equally attractive mellow patina. Stocks appear lightly cleaned with some scattered dings and a small split along the left side of the wrist. A small area of filler present on the forend. Good strong bore with some abrasion. Fine mechanics.
