Very interesting MP-40 with receiver tube manufactured by Mertzwerke (cos), with WaA44 proof and dated “43”. None of the other parts bear serial numbers, and even the endcap of the lower assembly, which is factory marked simply, “MP40 / fxo / 41” has no factory number applied. IRS registration number is electro penciled across the back of the end cap. There are proofs from ERMA (WaA280) on the barrel, bolt, and “hook” of the barrel, which was designed to keep the gun from recoiling back into a vehicle when the gun was fired through a slotted port, and a Haenel proof (37) on the detent knob of the lower, and Steyr (623) made the barrel retention nut and the rear sight. This cataloger will suggest that this gun was assembled from armorer’s spare parts into a gun after production of the MP-40 ceased in favor of MP-43/MP-44/STG-44 production. The muzzle is early style with the muzzle cover attachment hardware. The magazine is also early with the cross-hatching and marked “cos”. Barrel resting bar is of the gray “pot metal” type. Included with this lot are six original Nazi marked magazines, one of which has professionally added steel bosses added to both sides, likely as an adaptation for use in another model of machine gun. Also included is an original magazine loader, spare extractor, spare ejector and leather sling. The small locking screw which holds the larger grip frame retention screw in position is not present. Electronic NFA registry indicates “Schmeisser (GE Germany)” as the manufacturer. CONDTION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent original finish with some light scratches and loss of finish at the high edges with some areas of Gray patina showing through. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright. Bolt face is fine with possible welding blemishes at the lower edges where the cartridge rim, and possibly refinished. Bakelite furniture is near excellent with the reddish tinge which has proven to be very popular with collectors. Mechanics are crisp. This is a full-auto-only machine gun. This is a very interesting and quite desirable specimen considering the unusual combination of features and condition. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO & RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2024-05-006.
