This musket was shortened to cavalry carbine length during its period of use, perhaps in America during the Revolutionary War. The three stage barrel is unmarked. The early convex banana lockplate is marked "FURSTENBERG" vertically at the tail in a banner and "L No 68" in the center. The brass furniture includes an S-shaped convex sideplate buttplate with a long tang and baluster ramrod ferrules. An iron sling swivel was added at back of trigger guard and one towards muzzle. The large wrist escutcheon is engraved "G.V. / Montf. (Montfort) / 1694". Fruitwood stock with relief-carved foliate design around barrel tang and shaped panels around lock, sideplate, and ramrod entry ferrule. Period iron ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina, lock functions, and is in its original flintlock configuration with some small parts perhaps replaced during the period. Brass retains a light brown mustard patina. Front of trigger guard bow has been reinforced inside during period. Stock shows scattered age cracks and marks from use.
