Built on square butt 5-screw N-frame with pinned barrel. Probably a 1915-16 era gun. Standard finish appears to be pre WWI high polish with crisp two line barrel legend, S&W logo on right side of frame, matching serial number under the barrel, on back of yoke with cylinder removed and on the butt. The back of cylinder shows no serial number. The diamond checkered deep relief gold S&W medallions are crisp but no number on right panel. Barrel has no Smith & Wesson logo on left side which it should have and no caliber marking on right side, nor are there any British proofs or broad arrows. The back of the cylinder is still blue and does not appear to be ground down. Revolver is chambered for the .45 Colt which should not have a caliber on right side but this gun is outside the range of that small production run. All legends are crisp and finish appears factory. Our guess is that this was made by someone with access to the factory from a .455 gun but the left side barrel markings show no signs of having been removed and the serial number matches so the question as to who made it and why which is the real mystery. If you are looking for HE model in .45 Colt, that is what we have here, just probably not officially made by the factory. CONDITION : Excellent. Retains better than 95% finish, bright case colors, near mint grips, a fine action and a mirror bore and fitted with a Pachmyar grip adaptor and lanyard ring. Also comes with a post WWII military style canvas holster.
