Used for ammunition testing by the US Ordnance Department, Mann devices were built for various calibers. This .30 Carbine chambered example has a barrel manufactured by Underwood dated "5/18/43" on the shank. The barrel is affixed to a late, circa 1938/1939 production Model 1903 action, the bolt marked with matching serial number in electro-pencil. It is accompanied by a correct but non-matching wood storage crate for a .30 Mann device. Both the device and the crate are pictured in Larry Ruth's "War Baby III" on pages 1400 and 1401. CONDITION: Good. The barrel displays an overall toned gray patina with cleaned oxidation spots. Receiver is very good with the vast majority of the arsenal finishes retained. Very good bright and shiny bore. Fine mechanics. Crate rates very good overall. PROVENANCE: Larry Ruth Collection
