Circa 1905. A nice big game safari rifle with 24” London nitro proofed dovetail lump black steel barrels. Barrels fit with extractors. Filed flat top rib with dolls head extension, one standing rear sight at 100 yards and two folding rear sights at 200 and 300 yards. Sights with gold line markers. Raised front blade sight with integral low light flip-up sight. Top of right barrel reads “JOSEPH LANG & SON.”, “No.2 450 NITRO”. Left barrel reads “80 GRS CORDITE & 480. GRS SOFT NOSED NICKEL BULLET”, "7 BURY STREET ST JAMES’S. LONDON. ENGLAND.”. Bottom rib with sling loop. Mid rib reads ”10521”. Barrel flats read with London proofs, “13721”, 80GRS CORDITE”, “450 EX”, “480 GRS BULLET MAX”. Gray silver patina boxlock action with floral scrolls is engraved “JOSEPH LANG & SON”. Action is fit with set disk strikers, screw grip, checkered top lever, double triggers, checkered safe slide, “SAFE” in gold. Rifle is built with auto safe. Trigger guard with matched engraving and long bottom strap. Bottom strap with rifles serial number and with light scrolls. Dark reddish brown walnut stock with drop points, checkered pistol hand grip, case hardened scroll engraved steel grip cap with trap door (door with extra front blade sight), beaded cheekpiece, loop for sling, vacant oval and finished by a 1 – 1/2” orange rubber butt pad. Matching splinter forend with checkered and scroll engraved lever release. Exterior iron metal with scroll engraving. Interior iron metal with traces of case colors and is engraved with serial number. Rifle resides with a green canvas case with brass corners. Case with newer “JOSEPH LANG & SON LTD.” paper trade case label and blank charge card. Case comes with 2 sets of snap caps and nickel square oil bottle. Case outer lid reads “C.R. PACKARD III” “VALLEY FORGE, PA.”. With a set of RCBS .450 #2 N.E loading dies and mold, copies of "The British Bore Rifle" and "The Double Rifle Primer", and letter from Atkin Grant & Land, recording the configuration, regulation, and indicating that it was owned by J. Toft, Esq. of Kenya in 1952, research on Captain Grant, receipt from Griffin & Howe for replacement sights, regulation targets, and some other correspondence from Cal. CONDITION: Very good. as refurbished. Barrels are excellent (inside and out). Action has what appears to be freckling that has been polished/cleaned and appears to be mechanically sound. Stock is excellent with very light handling marks. Forend is very good with a chip on the right side edge near tip. Flip up sight missing insert. Case is good. PROVENANCE: Cal Pappas Collection
CORRECTION: The barrels are reblued, the stock revarnished, and the pad is of newer vintage.
