Typical post Civil War conversion to self contained cartridge single shot. Lock is dated 1864 with eagle and US SPRINGFIELD. The conversion block is dated 1866 with eagle head. The left side of the stock has two crisp cartouche stamps, one of which is Erskine Allen. There is the number 23 stamped on left side of stock and a D on left side of barrel. Standard configuration with all metal finished Arsenal bright, three bands, two swivels, Civil War style folding leaf rear sight, metal rod, full length walnut stock. These were very historical early Indian Wars used weapons'. "The “new” Model 1866 made a name for itself in the Indian Wars. Two famous battles in 1867 along the Bozeman Trail, the Wagon Box Fight and the Hayfield Fight, attribute their success to the Model 1866. In the Wagon Box Fight a small force of 38 men was able to hold off a far superior force of over a thousand Indians due to the speed at which they were able to reload their rifles." CONDITION. Excellent. The metal shows some toning, light patina and a few age freckles. The wood is excellent with expected scattered dings and impressions. All legends are sharp. Rifling is sharp with light frosting and nominal abrasions. A really fine early Indian Wars rifle.
