This extremely attractive double sided trade sign is constructed of oxblood red painted 1/8" steel cut in the shape of the iconic Winchester lever action rifle. Each side is stamped into the metal "WINCHESTER / REPEATING ARMS Co / NEW HAVEN CONN." on the stock and "FOUNDED 1866" on the forend. Both sides are period overpainted in white lettering "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS AND AMMUNITION" and "SINCE 1866". Complete with an associated and likely original oxblood red painted mounting bracket and chains. Although not described, an example is pictured on page 58 of Tom Webster's "Winchester Rarities". Several signs are known overpainted like this example. CONDITION: Very good as period painted with expected fading and patina from outdoor display. Colors remain strong and attractive, the lettering clear. The mounting holes are elongated, indicating this sign hung on the bracket for a long time. For transport, the chains likely cut but likely could be crimped to rehang the sign. A fantastic piece of Winchester advertisement that would be a fine addition to any gun room or office.
