Circa 1550. An extra plate worn over the helmet in the tilt, it covered the top and the back of the head. Medium roped comb centrally located and enhanced with etching. Rounded surface on each side of comb is pierced with five tear drop designs and enhanced with etched borders. Outer edge of the piece is decorated with beautiful scroll and leaf etched border. Displays a nice period patch on the inside, to cover damage on the comb. Comb is dented and has a small hole right on the peak. Comb also has splits at each end. Etching on the comb is slightly weak; however, the border etching is strong. Some wear in one spot and some pitting in another spot. Piece is all hand-forged laminated steel. Outer surface is covered with light rust, which can easily be cleaned, light pitting in some areas, and minimal water pitting. Very similar example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Stone's Glossary, page 222, illustrated.
