Circa 1580. Italian. Total covering in beautiful Pisan School etching. Decoration includes suits of armor, pieces of armor, mythological birds and two standing male figures. Deep acanthus leaf etching along brim is enhanced by rope border. Practically all the original rivets are present with their decorative brass washers. Inside there are four steel period patches. Front of the peak has a large hole, 2 – ¾ inches in length. Largest patch was an attempt to repair this, sometime during its working life, however the patch was later broken away again. Light surface pitting with patches of moderate pitting. A second smaller hole appears on the side of the peak, which is patched underneath. Another hole on the front edge of the peak is also patched on the inside. Half way down the front edge there is another small hole and at the base of the front of the bowl, there are two round holes where the rivets are missing. Brim is cracked along the edge in one place with a small hole. Deep etching still has the original blackened ground and there is virtually no wear to the etching.
