Circa 1580. German. Flambe blade with medial ridge running the length of the blade on each side. Deeply stamped in the haft, below the leather on one side is "SDIOSDI", with a separate touch mark, within a shield right below. On the opposite side of the haft, the sacred "IHS" monogram is hit twice. The upper portion of the leather on one side is stamped on all four corners are with the same indecipherable touch mark. Three large letters, on one side of the leather haft, originally painted in red, the last two letters appear to be "Z" and "W", still visible. Iron hilt with incised decoration, comprising oval side rings of diamond section, each enclosing a scrolled fleur-de-lis, down-turned quillons “en suite” each with three scrolls at the tip. The guard is decorated in a black and white style with 75% of the blackened coloring still present. The terminating scroll at the end of each quillon, each comes out of a stylistic animal head. Three stage wooden grip covered in original brown leather, the center of the grip is enhanced with three compressed swellings. Large plummet shaped segmented pommel deeply incised with classic acanthus leaf decoration. The grip is further enhanced at the top center and base with the original cloth and twisted wire tassels. The leather on the handle has cracked in one place, just above the guard; however, all is still present. Minor scuffs commensurate with the age. The blade is lightly pitted with small areas of moderate pitting.
