The Indian Mutiny Medal was instituted on August 18, 1858 for award to British and Indian troops who served in operations against the mutineers and who were engaged in final operations leading to the surrender of Lucknow and the clearing of the surrounding areas. The lot consists of (A) Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals to recipient "GUNNER. P. MERRY, 2ND TP 3RD BDE BL H. ART.". Original issue, as service numbers are not impressed on the original issue. The impression indicates this medal was awarded to Gunner P. Merry, 2nd Troop, 3rd Brigade Bengal Heavy Artillery. The medal displays the Delhi, Relief of Lucknow, and Lucknow clasps. Merry does not immediately appear in the records. CONDITION: Very good overall. (B) Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals to recipient "DRIVER JOHN GOOD, RL H. ART.". Original issue without service number. Records indicate this was awarded to Driver John Good, Troop E, Royal Horse Artillery. According to included records, Good was authorized to wear the Lucknow clasp, which this medal displays. CONDITION: Nice patina, good overall. (C) Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals to recipient "GUNR GEO. WADDELL, 4TH C. 2ND BN BOMBAY ARTY". Original issue, without service number. The impression indicates this medal was awarded to Gunner George Waddell, 4th Company 2nd Battalion Bombay Artillery. The medal displays the Central India clasp. There is 1 George Waddell in the records who is listed as a Private in the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot (The Ross-shire Buffs). CONDITION: A tag is attached to the back of the ribbon with Waddell's info. Good overall. (D) Indian Mutiny Medal impressed in Roman capitals to recipient "CORPL WM WILLIAMS, BENGAL YEO. CAVY". Original issue without service number. Records indicate this was awarded to Corporal William Williams, Bengal Yeomanry Cavalry. The unit served in 14 engagements. According to included records, There is a William Williams who served in the 21st Hussars (Late 3rd Bengal European Light Cavalry). CONDITION: A tag is attached to the back of the ribbon with Williams' name. Very good overall. Good overall.
