C. 1905–1910. Manufactured by Mills Novelty Company, Chicago, Illinois. Exceptionally rare and historically significant “Sibille – The Queen of Hearts” coin-operated fortune teller automaton, regarded as one of the finest known original examples of this early Mills production. The machine features a richly detailed carved walnut cabinet with original finish, surmounted by an ornate reverse-painted glass marquee reading “Sibille – The Queen of Hearts,” flanked by figural carved columns and decorative cast ornament. The interior presents a seated fortune teller figure in elaborate period costume, retaining original painted surface and lifelike expression, set behind glass with lace curtains and stage-like presentation. Upon coin activation, the internal mechanism engages a motor-driven system operating bellows and linkages that animate the figure while simultaneously dispensing a fortune card from the lower mechanism, a hallmark of early 20th century arcade amusements designed to combine theatrical presentation with interactive play. The machine retains its original reverse glass marquee panels with light wear and tight paint, as well as original interior components including card dispenser and mechanical action, illustrating the quality and ingenuity of Mills Novelty’s early fortune telling machines. CONDITION: Cabinet retains original walnut finish with expected wear consistent with age and use; reverse-painted glass marquee signs original with light wear and stable paint; fortune teller figure retains original paint; interior mechanism complete and fully operational; one crack present to the left side etched glass window; overall an outstanding and highly original example of a scarce and desirable Mills fortune teller machine. Comes with the original instruction card present inside.
