Considered to be the most advanced mechanical table top trade stimulator of its day, The Superior was made by The Mills Novelty Company c. 1904. It is not only a five-reel poker machine, but unlike any other machine of its kind, it will cut and print out a paper fortune with the poker hand imprinted so the customer can bring it to the bartender to get his reward in cigars. It is housed in an oversized oak cabinet with heavy decorated cast iron trim in order to contain the rugged mechanism made more like a slot machine than any other trade stimulator mechanism. The reels stop one at a time like a slot machine with a loud thud to let the other patrons know that a player is playing. This example reflects an older conservation with original castings and great original reel strips. It is topped with a replaced award card and possibly a replaced marquee, but very professionally done. The larger side handle activates the five reels and the smaller handle cranks out the paper fortune, and slices it off from the paper roll inside, a truly remarkable mechanical marvel of the era. The cabinet has been nicely conserved and the reels show little wear. This is an exceptional example of this very hard to find machine, comes with an extra roll of fortunes, and is one of four or five known to exist.
