Manufactured and inspected circa 1873 for use by the U.S. Cavalry. In the accompanying letter by John A. Kopec, he notes that this revolver is in a serial number range that suggests it was issued to the 6th or 10th Cavalry. In addition, it is noted in the letter that this SAA escaped the Ordnance Department recall of 1893 for the alteration to Artillery configuration. The most likely reason for this, in Kopec's opinion, is that the gun was "liberated" by a deserting trooper. Sub-inspector O.W. Ainsworth's "A" marking observed on barrel (faint), trigger guard, top of backstrap near hammer, and cylinder. Desirable early features include script barrel address, serial number close to cylinder pin, early ejector rod housing assembly which has both the donut ejector rod head as well as the reinforcement stud, 2 line patent date, and small front sight. The grips are replacements from an earlier revolver, probably an early civilian Single Action Army. CONDITION: Very good, as lightly polished to a gray patina with freckling throughout. Grips are very good with no major signs of distress. Right grip panel is museum numbered "H125". Action is tight and crisp. Bore is dark with visible rifling.
