Circa 1850s massive clip point Bowie knife. These have been discussed amongst knife scholars and they are presumed to be made by Wragg of Sheffield for the American frontier and Gold Rush market. Measures 17" overall with a 12" blade and a 4 - 1/2" sharpened false edge. No marks on the ricasso, the only stamps are on the left hand side of the blade and read "CAST STEEL / BOWIE KNIFE" and "ARDEN" just below the silver crossguard. Ivory scales with double sided silver escutcheons, held by 3 silver pins with silver wrapped pommel. Original soft leather scabbard is stamped 'N. ARDEN' near the throat. CONDITION: Very good. Some previous cleaning width traces of factory finish. Nice cutting edge with no nicks and a sharp tip. No wiggle or wobble.
