Per an included factory letter, this revolver was shipped as part of 50 gun shipment on June 14, 1861 to Governor William Denison, Columbus, Ohio. William Denison Jr. served as the 24th Governor of Ohio from 1860 to 1862 and enthusiastically mobilized the state in the opening days of the Civil War. Several shipments of Colt revolvers such as this were procured to arm the Ohio volunteers. These troops were initially used to secure Ohio's valuable railroad and telegraph infrastructure, in addition to protecting the First Wheeling Convention, which led to the formation of West Virginia. Revolver is fitted with an 8" round barrel with German silver blade front sight and Hartford address. Revolver features a rare fully fluted cylinder, as is found on only around 4,000 early production specimens. Frame cut for shoulder stock with matching steel back strap. Standard silver plated trigger guard and 1-piece smooth walnut grips. Factory letter confirms configuration. Matching numbers observed on frame, barrel assembly, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder arbor, and wedge. CONDITION: Very good. Iron components display a rich gray patina with some freckling and other marks. Trigger guard retains significant portions of original silver plating, the balance a golden brass patina. Grips have a few traces of varnish with an honest moderately worn appearance. Strong, black powder abraded bore. Mechanically fine.
