An included factory letter indicates this extremely scarce special order Winchester 1886 shipped March 14, 1902, in .45-70 smokeless with 22" round barrel, extra light, plain trigger, half magazine, and oil finished D style carved fancy pistol grip stocks with cheekpiece and rubber shotgun butt. A Repair and Return is also listed on March 31 of 1902. Rifle remains in this very scarce configuration as shipped. The blued 22" nickel steel barrel is fitted with Lyman hunting front sight and sporting rear. Button magazine. Receiver is finished in polished blue with case hardened lever and hammer. Figured walnut forend is checkered and carved in style D with attractive acorn and oakleaf motifs. The round knob pistol grip rear stock is likewise checkered with the oak leaf and acorn carved motifs. Very scarce on Winchester repeaters, the right side of stock features a cheekpiece. Stock channel marked with "40" assembly number, the matching "40 XX R" assembly number and wood grade stamped on the lower tang. Complete with sling eyes. Butt plate is checkered hard rubber with the central WRACO logo. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel retains approximately 90% original lustrous blue with an area of wear on the left side of muzzle. Receiver retains approximately 60% original blue, the belly largely fading to patina with scattered flaking and wear throughout. Case colors are strong and bright with fading on the underside of lever. Stocks have a few scattered impressions and solvent lines, the carving and checkering remains sharp. Especially fine mirror bright bore. Crisp mechanics. A truly outstanding documented special order deluxe Winchester with very scarce features.
