Tiffany imported British pattern 1821 enlisted saber and scabbard. Type I in Thillmann's designation with an unstopped fuller and star/TC blade stamp, but with the rare addition of "Tiffany & Co." on the obverse ricasso as well. RM&SB blade stamp on back edge near hilt for Robert Mole and Sons, Birmingham. CONDITION: Steel hilt a muted silver grey mixed with dark grey spots, but smooth metal with no corrosion. No wire. Leather wrap worn smooth and down to wood in places, about 20% remaining, but wood blends in well with dark brown and black of grip and it is not unsightly. Pad in place under guard. Blade excellent with good edge and point, no nicks, bright minor grey spots, brown stain at tip on either side that will likely clean. Scabbard was plated and shows rising brown overall in spidery patterns, thicker on lower half, some small areas of crustiness. Rings in place. Inventory number "W-8" scratched below throat. A very scarce saber imported by a well known military goods dealer in the Civil War, well documented in period photographs. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
