Circa 1930s United States Marine Corps mameluke sword named to Major John Frederick Roy. Roy was born Baltimore, Maryland on October 10, 1893. During the First World War, Roy was a medical student when joined the Marine Corps Reserve on July 9, 1917. He began his service as a private and was assigned to the Marine barracks at Parris Island on July 27, 1917. 3 months later, Roy was honorably discharged and transferred to active service on October 9, 1917 and was given a 2 year commission as Second Lieutenant. He was promoted First Lieutenant on September 6, 1918 and later to Captain on March 5, 1919. His assignments include Quantico Virginia 10/25/17; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 2/23/18; Norfolk Virginia, 7/5/18; New York, New York 9/21/18; and Quantico Virginia. 11/10/18. He was honorably discharged 7/31/19 and returned to Baltimore. In 1942 he was living in Washington, DC and was working in Baltimore when he enlisted again in the Marine Corps September 1, 1942 after the outbreak of World War II. Roy was commissioned as a Major and seems to have been assigned to the HQ Eastern Procurement Division at Philadelphia, where he is listed in April 1945. He was discharged On December 14, 1945 and later passed away on November 17, 1980 in Washington DC. He is interred at Arlington National Cemetery where he is listed as "J. Frederick Roy Major USMC". The blade is named "J. Frederick Roy" and features acid etched patriotic USMC designs. The ricasso is marked with the maker "J.H. Ferd Hahn / Baltimore / MD". The sword features a cross hilt with faux ivory grips, featuring gold finish ornamental mounts. The sword is complete with its original metal scabbard. CONDITION: The blade remains bright and exhibits several scratches and blemishes towards the tip. The grips remain tightly secured to the hilt with no cracks. The scabbard remains bright, the mounts and drag remain tightly in place, and there are scattered blemishes. Overall very good. JLD
