Vietnam War grouping identified to Aviation Machinist's Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class Dennis R. Bacon who served aboard the USS Hornet during the late 1960s. He participated in the USS Hornet Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 NASA Lunar Space Capsule Recovery Missions. The grouping includes Bacon’s ID cards, various pieces of insignia, three deck caps including his Apollo 12 Space Recovery Mission cap, and his deck jacket that displays various patches from Bacon's cruises and service. There are three books, including the USS Hornet Apollo 11 Recovery Mission book, 68-69 Pacific Cruise book for the Hornet, and "A Heritage of Excellence USS Hornet 1775-1970". Also included is Bacon's Shellback certificate dated February 23, 1969. Lastly, Bacon's 1968 Gerber Mark II fighting knife is included. The knife is marked "GERBER / PORTLAND, ORE., USA" on obverse ricasso and numbered "09080" on reverse ricasso. Obverse blade is named "D.R. BACON / B829017". The knife is complete with its brown leather scabbard marked by Gerber on the belt loop. The blade remains bright with excellent paint on handle and supper leather scabbard. Clothing pieces exhibit scattered stains and tarnishing expected with service wear at sea. Books remain intact and appear complete. Paper items and ID cards show moderate-heavy wear as expected of material carried at sea. CONDITION: Fair-very good.
