This Mills Novelty "Liberty Bell" is as scarce as they come. An original cast-iron early slot machine, one of three of the various ornate machines Mills manufactured during the earlier part of the 20th century. However, here is what makes this machine so special, an original side vendor mounted on the left side of the slot. Liberty Bell slots with side vendors are scarce enough, but one with the side vendor on the left side is currently a very exclusive club. The machine retains the earlier style tin fruit strips, with g,u,m on the reel strips indicating that this is a gum vending machine. A very early example of a ruse to circumvent the anti gambling laws. Each pull of the handle allows the purchase of a packet of gum. The original marquee and award card included. A winning combination rings the bell and coins would rush into the payout cup. CONDITION: Overall a beautiful original example of an early elaborate cast iron slot machine with side panels overlooking the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty off in the distance. Showing some oxidation to the castings, and some missing plating, with a small chip in the casting to the right side of the front door. c. 1911. Retains original Yale lock with Mills insignia key.
