An early Civil War commission signed by Abraham Lincoln appointing Joseph P. Ash to "Second Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Cavalry". The commission is dated September 9, 1861 and was signed with dip pen. It is also signed by Secretary of War, Simon Cameron. The signatures were authenticated and the commission comes with a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity. This commission was once part of the renowned collection of Dr. John K. Lattimer, who was known to collect memorabilia related to the 16th President. CONDITION: The commission is worn and exhibits blemishes typical of old paper including creasing, edge wear, small tears, foxing, and spotting. The ink has faded but remains legible. A nice Lincoln document that is ready for framing.
