A beautifully engraved silver pocket match safe belonging to Abraham Lincoln. This bears profuse geometric and floral designs surrounding a vertical oval cartouche on each side, with an “A” engraved on one side and “Lincoln” engraved on the other. Marked “W&H” inside the lid. The case still contains 6 period matches. Pocket match safes were essential not only for lighting candles, but also the household gas lamps which had been installed in the White House in 1848. This comes from the Dr. John K. Lattimer collection, one of the most renowned collections of Lincoln and presidential memorabilia.
