Frank Andrina was not only one of Disney's most talented animators, he was also one of the most knowledgeable, scholarly, and sophisticated collectors of early arms and armor in America. His ownership of this elaborate and superbly executed piece of 16th century metalwork gives this splendid mace provenance and a guarantee of authenticity. Measures 27" overall and weighing 3 lbs 13.2 oz. Six flanges with reinforced points, a 3" four sided spike at top decorated with engraving. Top of the one piece forged handle is pierced with numerous holes to lighten. Shaft is writhen and ending in spiral fluting, superbly executed with diamond checkering at base and lanyard loop. One flange struck with armorer's mark, cross, and initials "HK" in a lozenge in addition to three crosses in further lozenges. Another flange marked with cross in lozenge, as are all others. Each flange tapers (a characteristic of all genuine maces) and flanges also show delamination throughout. Lanyard loop itself shows forging and base is decorated with punched flowers. CONDITION: Condition of mace throughout would rate excellent for metalwork of this period. All together one of the rarest and finest pieces of early arms and armor to be sold in America in quite some time.
