Circular and chased with an historical ship on one side and with raised, swirled letters on the other spelling ‘Josephine’, all around chased and embossed waves and below a scalloped edge with scallop shells at intervals, the low base cast and chased with waves, fishscales and four facing sea monsters’ heads. Underside of base engraved with a partly-removed quote. Apparently unmarked. Diameter: 22-1/4 in. Weight: 312.7 ozt This lot is accompanied by an issue of Life Magazine for July 17, 1944, which has an article on the sale of the contents of Lynnewood Hall, the residence of P A B Widener. The bowl is illustrated on p. 93.
