The heavy 3 foot long blade is etched on right side with a large fierce American eagle and E Pluribus Unum, left side with U.S. Stamped on ricasso W. Klauberg. The three branch hilt of gilt brass with Lady Liberty pommel. The ivory grip is a work of art, carved in relief, with crested helmet, two sabers, and crossed pistols. Silver scabbard engraved towards the drag with a flag and U.S.C. for United States Cavalry, held by union officer in full uniform with saber at his side. CONDITION: Blade would rate excellent, retaining nearly all of its original bright polish. Very minor discoloration towards ricasso. The ivory hilt with beautiful hand worn mellow patina and one tight crack towards the guard. The gilt brass hilt retaining much original bright gilding. The silver scabbard in excellent condition with beautiful engraving of the Union soldier. Presentation in reserve and one extremely minor dent. Sword retains what appears to be its original bullion sword knot. Captain James Bliss enjoyed a distinguished career as an officer in the 8th New York Cavalry as he was a major present at the surrender at Appomattox. This guarantees that this sword was presented to him by veterans of his unit while the Civil War was still raging. A beautiful and historically important Civil War presentation sword with the ultra rare raised carved ivory grip and silver scabbard.
