Chris Madsen written Oklahoma Territory guard (James W. Nobles) pay document, 1907. Deputy U. S. Marshal Madsen was, with Bill Tilghman and Heck Thomas, one of the "Three Guardsmen" responsible for the arrest, incarceration, or death of over 300 ne'er do wells during their tenure in the territory. He was appointed as a special deputy in the territory's Southern District in early March 1898. That year he joined Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, serving as quartermaster sergeant. After the Spanish-American War ended, Madsen returned to Indian Territory and served as a deputy U.S. Marshall. Paper size is 7 1/2" x 2 1/2" and framed 7 1/2" x 12 1/4".
