Circa 1850-early 1900’s. Double edged dagger blade with only a subtle hint of a ricasso, marked on the blade’s face “JOSEPH/RODGERS/&/SONS”. One piece ivory handle carved in wrapped rope pattern, nickel silver crossguard and ferrule, original leather sheath with nickel silver tip and throat. Blade with most of original crocus polish visible, a few patches of light pitting, only lightly sharpened and with fine scratches from removal and insertion into the sheath. Handle with a crack on one side. Ex. David Lennon collection. Justly famed for its high quality products, Joseph Rodgers & Sons was unquestionably the world’s most famous cutlery maker in its heyday. Similar dirk knives but without ferrules appear in an early 20th century Joseph Rodgers and Sons catalog and in Samuel Setian’s book about Rodgers (see below). Domenech, Abel.
