Until recently, this work had been attributed to Salvatore Rosa (Italian, 1615-1673). According to the Sotheby's 1987 catalogue entry, "possible attribution of this painting include Werner van den Valckert, Nicolaes Claes Moyaert or Johannes Woutersz. According to Luigi Salerno (Salvatore Rosa, 1963, p. 155) the painting has a companion piece titled "Laomedon, King of Troy with Neptune and Apollo" in the collection of Glasgow College, Glasgow. The present lot was engraved by William Sharp, London and published in 1792, as after an original painting by Salvator Rosa in the possession of Edward Knight, Esq."
