ENGRAVED REVOLUTIONARY WAR POWDER HORN OF BENJAMIN WILLE INSCRIBED LIBERTY AND PROPERTY NO STAMP ACT 1777.

Benjamin Wille was a private in Captain James Gray’s Company in Colonel Alexander Scammell’s 3rd New Hampshire Regiment. In 1777, his unit was heavily engaged in the Saratoga Campaign where they fought in the Battle of Freeman's Farm on September 19 and then the Battle of Bemis Heights on October 7, which directly led to the British surrender. Benjamin Wille is listed in the State Papers of New Hampshire as a resident of Durham New Hampshire. He is recorded as signing the "Association Test " in 1776 in Loudon, pledging loyalty to the American cause that is considered "Patriotic Service" by lineage societies. The horn measures about 9" across the bow and has a concave conical spout section. The main body is engraved on the front within a panel: "Benjaman Wille / His Horn AD1777 / Made in Kings Streat" In a large cartouche above that is inscribed "Liberty: And /Property: no /Stamp: Act / 1777". To the right is a colonial man wearing a mitre or grenadier cap resting his hands on a cane. There is a road with 30 grenadiers marching with their muskets on their shoulders down a road. There is also a star, three lines of buildings and a rattlesnake. The flat wood plug has an iron staple in the center for strap attachment. CONDITION: Horn retains a light honey patina and shows some raised grain and some wear th the back side from carrying. A small sliver absent along base of horn. A very historic and attractive powder horn.
