Exceedingly rare copy from the personal library of General Phil Sheridan, famed cavalry leader and close friend of G.A. Custer. This example has a wonderful chain of custody and has not never been offered on the collector market before. It was purchased from the U.S. Cavalry Association in March of 1950 by the consignor and has been in his research library ever since. It is signed to the inside "P.H. Sheridan - Lieut General" in period iron ink script. Titled: 'George Armstrong Custer My Life on the Plains - Or, Personal Experiences With Indians.' (New York: Sheldon & Co., 1874), first edition, 256 pages with 8 plates, original brown cloth with tooled gold gilt writing and bison to cover and spine. This memoir is a must-have work for historians of the Custer era that require an understanding of events through the eyes of Custer himself. He recounts his early campaigns against the Cheyenne and finishes with his dealings with the Sioux. CONDITION: Binding is tight, with some shelf wear mostly confined to the edges, corners, and either end of the spine. This early volume is hard to find in it's own right let alone the significance of belonging to one of the most famous US cavalry commanders of all time. Includes a copy of the letter from the director of the U.S. Cavalry Journal book department to the consignor. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Wagner cavalry museum collection. CORRECTION: Photo added

Condition: (Very Good).
