Very nice example of a World War II German 20mm ammo crate that was commandeered by a USGI and used as a "bringback" crate. The crate is named to T/Sgt. Thomas N. Barry of Chicago, Illinois. Barry was born on August 16, 1920 and enlisted in the Army on May 7, 1942. He was assigned to the 8th Armored Division, in Fort Knox, Kentucky and in September of 1942 he was assigned to the 13th Armored Division, in Camp Beale, California. In January, 1945, the 13th Armored Division was sent overseas to France and later to Germany. Barry served as a platoon sergeant in Germany during the last few months of the war. He was awarded the Bronze Star for action under fire in southern Germany in April 1945 and a Purple Heart in May of 1945, when Barry was wounded in Simbach, Germany. A bullet penetrated Barry's bladder, and he ended the war in various hospitals. The top and bottom of the crate is marked to Barry as well as the interior of the lid. The original paper labels remain in place on the interior and exterior. CONDITION: The crate retains most of its original paint and exhibits various scratches and dents on the exterior. Latches function properly. Paper labels on exterior are in poor condition. Interior labels are very good plus. Overall good. A nice crate with better provenance. JLD
