Lot consists of two brass hilted eagle pommel American sword circa 1840, both with etched blades and brass scabbards. (A) Brass wire bound grip with flat knuckleguard cast with floral designs. Shield shaped languettes with tails of arrows on obverse and arrow points on reverse. Blue blade panels with flamboyant ends. Small floral and martial motifs drypoint etched and gold washed. CONDITION: Good. Guard has slight looseness. Quillon with slight bend downward. Blade is smooth metal, but grey above the blue panels with some darker grey spots. Brass scabbard matches patina of hilt. Floral engraving at each ring and for 8" above button drag. Throat stud missing. (B) Cylindrical reeded grip. Chain knuckleguard. Downturned scroll counterguard with dynamically canted American eagle. Blade bright etched. Wm. Horstmann & Sons drypoint etched obverse; Philadelphia reverse. Obverse etched with palmette, floral scrolls and arms mixed with vines. Back edge scrolled with leafy vine. Reverse etched with palmettes, floral scrolls and crossed flags, drums, trumpets and shield amid floral elements. Scabbard with floral engraving at ring and for 4" from button finial drag. Stud in place with scroll edges. "HORSTMANN" stamp in sunken rectangle at reverse of scabbard throat. CONDITION: Hilt tight. Blade bright with good edge and point. Small grey spots near tip. A few darker grey spots reverse near guard. Short brown sections at base of blade either side at lower ricasso next to guard. Brown spotting to gilt finish on underside of counterguard. Brass scabbard with age patina. SR
