Eprouvettes (also referred to as powder testers) were simple handheld devices used to check the potency of powder before it was used in firearms. This lot consists of 3 examples comprising: (A) Large tester with actual measure made from an oversized V spring and mounted to a elliptical ruler with engraved measuring points, and a brass marker for the ruler. When fired, the V spring compressed and forces the brass tab to move to the appropriate measurement. Simple boxlock action with percussion action devoid of markings (probably Belgian or French based on the grip shape). CONDITION: Fair to good. Measuring implements are good, with legible markings. Metal has ben oxidation throughout, cleaner on the ruler than on the boxlock area, which is essentially a smooth chocolate patina. No trigger guard. Cock with some pitting from use. Grip is damaged at lock and exposes internals. V Spring compressed appropriately. (B) Unsigned tested with a boxlock action, with measurer being a wheel mounted under the muzzle and restrained by a V spring, with a lever mounted on the left side to release the pressure on the wheel and reset. Sparse floral engraving on boxlock. Birdshead grip is newer than balance of pistol. CONDITION: Very good, metal has been cleaned in the European style over some spotted oxidation with some softening to legends. Grip is very good with some hand rubbing wear to high edge. Mechanically fine. (C) Brass framed powder tester by Mevans, signed on the boxlock with stands of arms on both sides, marked "Birmingham" on right side. Tester mechanism very similar to (B). Slabside walnut grips. CONDITION: Very good. Iron testing mechanism with some spotted oxidation throughout, brass a deep mustardy patina with some darkness at edges. Grips are excellent with some handling marks and chips befitting a lifetime of use. A nice lot of powder testers. EMW
