Mississippian culture. Highly delineated and artistically rendered features found in the eyes, ears, lips and head gear of this human effigy, surpass those typically seen. A unique feature of this bowl is the "support" or "handle" attached to the back of the head and extending down and attaching to the bowl. This support features its own unique design element. The head is hollow and contains, most likely, small pebbles. Placed there by the maker, perhaps to be used as a rattle. Body of bowl is solid. Some restoration to head and neck area.
