Late Mississippian 600 B.P. Golden Lake Site Mississippi Co., Arkansas. The Roy Pohler Headpot is an exquisite example of a grayware variation of this rare ritual vessel. Dr. James F. Cherry, in his epic 1990 book dedicated to Headpots, included this vessel on page 120, figures 88 and 133. Dr. Cherry pointed out, “This Headpot has an unusual occipital bun. Additional adorno include multiple ear piercings, a pierced forelock tab, and a highly burnished finish. One of the rarest features on this Headpot is the fact that it is solid, with No restoration. This is almost unheard of, as ground shifting over hundreds of years breaks almost all large pots like this. Two X-rays accompany this lot confirming the solid condition of this pot. The Pohler Headpot has been featured in many collector publications throughout its history. Included with this lot is a copy of Dr. Cherry’s Headpot book as well as two collector journals. All featuring the Pohler Headpot.
