Late Archaic 4000 - 3000 B.P. Ferruginous Quartz is a very hard stone, making it difficult to work by hand, but it was the material of choice for the elite society of the terminal Archaic period. Gemstone like color, no doubt, created this demand, and choice stone specimens like this were probably reserved for use by the best artisans. This Hourglass style Quartz masterpiece captures an incredible pastel cloudscape of soft red-orange intermingling with clouds of soft white. Breath taking.
