Proto-Historic period 600 - 500. B.P. Montgomery Co., Alabama. This pipe retains an exquisitely polished finish that time and use have turned almost black. An unusual “chin” protrudes from the lower front of the pipe. The pipe stem is rounded, and terminates with a flared tab on top containing a drilled hole which was, no doubt, used for suspension. This drilled steam tab is known as a “gunsite” tab because early native pipe makers were so enthralled by the end of a smoking gun barrel that they carved their pipes to mimic the phenomena, including the gun site.
Item Dimensions: L. 2" x H. 2 - 1/2".
