Mississippian era 1000 - 400 B.P. Northern Alabama origin. This piece of ocean shell was traded from the gulf coast up to Northern Alabama, reflecting the extensive trade network established during this period. Almost all shell gorgets are decorated on the inner, concave surface. This gorget features a delicate, spaced punctuate design decorating the outer, convex side. Most unusual.
