Serial number has been worn or polished off. Standard model 1866 engraved saddle ring carbine with a 20" barrel, full magazine, curved carbine style buttplate. Engraving in contemporary to gun. "J.U." is stamped on right upper inside tang (John Ulrich). No barrel markings visible. Forearm is cracked and has numerous nicks, Looks to be a replacement, and refinished. Butt stop is a replacement and is ill-fitting. All blue metal surfaces are brown-grey. Strong rifling, but pitted. Rear sight is standard carbine ladder, and is worn. Brass is unclean. Most of the screws are buggered. The upper tang is stamped with the block letter J. U. It does not have the serifs normally found on the J. U. signature, therefore we can only attribute this piece to John Ulrich.
