This was the standard sniper rifle used by the United State Marine Corps in Vietnam. The very rifle is featured by serial number in Peter R. Senich's book "The One Round War" on page 261. This rifle was shipped from the National Match Support Dept. to John W. Johnson at Quantico, Virginia, in 1981. Johnson won this rifle at the National Trophy Individual Match at Camp Perry. Rifle was produced in 1969 for the Marine Corps sniper units, the basis for which was a Remington Model 700 bolt action rifle with a 24" barrel, parkerized finish, Redfield base, rings, and 3x9 scope, and walnut stock. The scope and base are electro-pencil matched to the receiver number. Both the barrel and receiver are stamped "U.S.". The barrel and receiver sport the factory parkerized finish of which this gun retains approximately 99% of that finish. Stocks are near mint. Action is perfect. Bore is mint. Rifle comes with copies of the article from the book, an instruction manual for the Model 700 sniper, and instruction manual for the scope. Chambered for the 7.62 NATO round. The marines purchased 995 M40 sniper rifles from Remington between 1966 and 1971. The black annodized accu-range scopes were purchased by the Marines as replacements in the early 70s. A majority of these rifles were rebuilt in 1977 with heavy barrels and fiberglass stocks, therefore unmodified rifles such as this example, with all the documented paperwork, are all but impossible to find on today's marked. the hard carrying case even has Johnson's name painted on it. A wonderful high condition, all original, unaltered sniper rifle.
