Offered is a classic example of a finely crafted heavy barrel bench or target rifle manufactured by Whitmore of Boston in the 1850s. Features include a 33" heavy half octagon barrel. It is a half stock with full bottom rib, oak cleaning rod, and set trigger. Sights include a globe front with an adjustable with a lollipop rear sight. Original walnut stock is excellent and features nickel plated buttplate, intricate engraved trigger guard, and accents. The barrel is basically a smooth blue-brown patina. The stock is superb, exhibiting all of the original finish. One small 1/2" crack at breech. Rifle exhibits fine period engraving throughout. Excellent bore. Perfect working order. .42 caliber. Beautiful example of a true one of a kind custom 1850s rifle. These type of guns were often used as sniper rifles during the Civil War.
