It is estimated that 1,000 to 1,500 of these were manufactured between 1857 and 1864. They were offered in both .36 and .44 caliber (this is a .36), percussion system, and 31-1/4" octagon to round barrel. This example has deluxe fiery grain checkered walnut stock, walnut fore end, pewter nose cap, and escutcheon. The hammer and lever were case colored but are now basically patina. All the metal on this gun is basically a soft brown patina. Original nipples are fine. Wood is beautiful fire grain but checkering is worn. Strong rifling but dark. Perfect working order. Top of frame is stamped "Colt's Patent 1856 Address Col. Colt Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A.". It has a folding rear sight and blade front. Extremely nice condition. These are usually found in less than fine condition and this example is far above average. Extremely handsome.
