Beautiful mid-19th century custom built single shot percussion target rifle in caliber .40. Features include a 31-1/4" full octagon barrel finished in the white, sporting rear sight, fire blued detachable long range sight. Top of the barrel is stamped with the custom gunsmith "W. Packard, Elyria". There was a W. Packard who had a gun shop in the public square from 1854 to 1862. He was born in 1802 in Massachusetts, moved to New York, and finally Ohio. Lock is also stamped "W. Packard" which is unusual for this time as most custom gunsmiths purchased their locks. Other features include a beautiful walnut half stock that remains in near mint condition with no cracks or chips of any kind. Bottom of stock is also stamped "W.P.". It has a semi-fancy brass trigger guard. Has a full wrap-around brass buttplate. Traces of finish on the side plate. Long range sight retains virtually all of the original high polish fire blue finish. Has a 1" false muzzle. Strong bore with light frosting. Perfect action. Original nipple. Comes in a vintage period custom French fitted carry case in which rests the brass tipped ramrod, some original linen, brass bullet mold, iron bullet mold, and an unusual wooden accessory. A wonderful example of an early custom gunsmith high quality rifle from the Ohio area.
