This is a fine example of the all time classic 1856-1865 horse head pommel clip point bowie knife. Barnes operated out of 239 Solly Street, Sheffield from 1856 to 1865. The blade is 8-1/2" long by 1-7/8" wide. Makers name is stamped on the ricasso and is quite visible. Blade has areas of pitting, the tip is chipped, and there is some chipping to the blade. The quillion and horse head pommel are pressed metal and silver plated. Grip is ebony that has some minor stress cracks. Comes with the original two-tiered leather sheath with German silver throat and tip. Overall length of knife is 14-1/2". A true classic bowie knife from the golden period. An almost identical example can be found on page 17 in the book "A Sure Defense" by Kenneth Burton.
