Circa 1850's. Offered is a fine large Sheffield pre-England bowie knife. It is a standard drop point that features a 9-1/2" blade with IXL stamped on the ricasso. Total length is 14-3/4". Maker and Sheffield are stamped on top of blade. Has a German nickel quillion and pommel with a bone handle and two bolsters. Blade is fine, does not appear to have been sharpened, perfect tip. Stag handle is excellent with a couple of minor stress cracks. Comes in a beautiful leather sheath with nickel tip and throat.
